Which ingredients in nail polish are of animal origin?

Carmine is a red pigment obtained by crushing Nopal scale insects. For every 1 kilogram of the red dye, 150,000 scale insects must die; as red is present in many colour variations, this animal-derived ingredient is found not only in classic red, but also in pink, violet, brown and many other colours. In addition, there are so-called effect pigments, such as guanine. This pigment is responsible for the shimmer and is extracted from fish scales. However, nail care polishes or oils in nail cosmetics may also contain animal-derived ingredients. One example is keratin, which is produced from ground-up hair, horns or hooves.
