What types of surface disinfection are there?
When it comes to surface disinfection, a distinction can be made between spray disinfection and wipe disinfection. In most cases, spray disinfection should be used in combination with wiping. This ensures that the disinfectant covers the entire surface. Disinfectant wipes are generally used for wiping disinfection. These have the benefit of enabling tools and equipment to be cleaned and disinfected at the same time.

Spray disinfection: Compared to wipe disinfection, spray disinfection alone is not as effective. For this reason, spray disinfection should always be followed by wiping with a cleaning cloth or disinfectant wipes. These include products such as the surface disinfectant wipes and the alcohol-free disinfectant wipes. They are also available in alcohol-free versions for use on alcohol-sensitive surfaces.
These selection criteria must be observed for medical use
- Odour intensity: For interim disinfection after patients, fragrance-free products are recommended. This prevents unpleasant odours in the air and the need for additional ventilation or cooling of the areas.
- Reliable efficacy: A broad spectrum of activity and high efficacy against pathogens are particularly important for routine disinfection in areas close to patients.
- Material compatibility: Disinfectants with a high alcohol content can damage sensitive surfaces or medical equipment. It is therefore essential to consider material compatibility when making a selection.
- Method of application: Wipe disinfection is considered the most thorough form of surface disinfection. This should always be used on easily accessible surfaces. For hard-to-reach areas, however, spray disinfection is recommended.
- Contact time: Certain disinfectants require a contact time in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. The treated surface may only be walked on once it has visibly dried. The manufacturer gives the contact time on the label.
