What range of pathogens should disinfectants cover?
Comprehensive practice hygiene depends on awareness of the range of pathogens and sources of infection. What types of skin and wound disinfection are there?
Types of disinfectants differ according to their effectiveness against microorganisms. It is important to distinguish between disinfection and sterilisation. Whilst sterilisation delivers absolute sterility, particularly for medical instruments and laboratory equipment, disinfection reduces germs and pathogens by up to 99.9 per cent. Disinfection, being gentler, is therefore the method of choice for regular skin hygiene.
In the context of wound disinfection and supportive wound care, attention must be paid to infection prevention and pain-free directions. Besides moisturising wound gels that provide an antibacterial protective layer, pain-free wound disinfectants without iodine or alcohol are also suitable options.
Depending on the spectrum of activity, a distinction can be made between the following types of disinfectants:
- Bactericidal: Agents such as alcohols, phenols and chlorine provide a bactericidal effect to kill bacteria.
- Virucidal: Virucidal efficacy is categorised as ‘limited virucidal’, ‘limited virucidal PLUS’ and ‘virucidal’. Limited virucidal agents kill enveloped viruses, i.e. viruses with a lipid envelope. These include coronavirus, measles and herpes. Limited virucidal PLUS works in the same way, but particularly kills adenoviruses, noroviruses and rotaviruses. Virucidal agents, on the other hand, are effective against both enveloped and non-enveloped viruses.
Which disinfectant is suitable?
Then you should look for an effective skin antiseptic. The disinfectant should cover a broad spectrum of pathogens. Reliable skin disinfection provides at least bactericidal, fungicidal and limited virucidal effects. It is important that the disinfectant is gentle on the skin and reduces skin irritation. Irritation can be particularly prevented thanks to the combination of disinfection and skin care products. It is advisable to start the working day with a skin protection cream to protect the skin from the effects of disinfection applied several times a day. Products for surface disinfection are 100 per cent effective against pathogens that can persist on inanimate surfaces for hours, days or months.
