Why use cold plasma in podiatry and foot health?
Cold plasma is a modern, pain-free technology designed to help reduce bacteria on the nails and skin. This physical treatment can support antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal processes – even in hard-to-reach areas. The contactless application is gentle and can support the physiological regeneration processes of the tissue. For podiatrists and alternative practitioners specialising in podiatry, this means: better treatment outcomes, higher patient satisfaction and a clear innovative edge in day-to-day practice.
1. Formation of cold plasma
Cold plasma is formed thanks to the ionisation of air using electrical energy at approximately 40 °C. It is a highly reactive, electrically charged gas that is effective without causing thermal stress.
2. Mechanism of action: Plasma against microorganisms
The plasma generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), which specifically inactivate microorganisms, damage cell structures and alter the local environment – yet sparing healthy cells. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) formed in the process can penetrate the skin and nails, where their physical effects support microbiological processes and the body’s natural regenerative mechanisms along with other processes.
3. Regeneration and healthy nail growth
Cold plasma can promote microcirculation, blood flow and cell regeneration. It supports regeneration along with healthy nail growth and can be optimally integrated into complementary treatment plans.
1. Preparing for treatment
Put on personal protective equipment and, to proceed, carefully prepare the affected nail using a diamond bur.
2. Preparing the device for use
Unpack the disposable spacer in front of the patient and slide it fully onto the device so that it sits securely – the device is now ready for use.
3. Select treatment duration
Set the treatment time due to nail fungus to 2 minutes. Up to 10 treatments of 2 minutes each are possible per session or per spacer. So that all 10 toes can be treated with a single spacer, up to 10 treatments of 2 minutes each are possible.
4. Targeted use of plasma
Press ‘Start’ and have the spacer just above the nail. If necessary, lift the nail fold lightly or position the drill in a gooseneck configuration.
5. Ensure hygiene
Dispose of the spacer after treatment, clean and disinfect the device in accordance with the instructions, and then put it in the charging cradle.
6. Practical ways to complement therapy
Cold plasma and AntiMYX tincture complement each other in their directions and, when used together, can reinforce the therapeutic effect.

Cold plasma has established itself as a modern method of germ reduction. In practical application, however, it is evident that ROS results often vary. A crucial factor here is the plasma source. The ViroCap utilises the piezoelectric effect and a unique ceramic rod, enabling energy to be transferred to the tissue in a targeted and efficient manner. With diffuser systems, on the other hand, a large proportion of the energy is lost before it reaches the nail. This results in significant energy wastage, minimal effectiveness and treatment outcomes that are difficult to replicate.
