Mobile cold plasma technology for podiatry: HELLMUT RUCK GmbH brings ViroCap exclusively to Europe

Non-invasive, physical therapy methods are becoming increasingly important in professional podiatry. Cold plasma – described in the specialist literature as cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) – has been trialled in dermatological applications for several years and has now found its way into everyday podiatry practice.

In particular, positive reports from clinical practice regarding its use as an adjunctive treatment for nail disorders and skin lesions are in place. “After more than 17 years in podiatry practice, I have been genuinely surprised by the rapid improvements seen in some of my patients – I hadn’t expected that,” says Elisabeth Prinz, podiatrist and sector-specific alternative practitioner.

RUCK ViroCap generates cold atmospheric plasma using the piezoelectric effect with a ceramic rod. This technology enables targeted, focused energy delivery to the treatment area. Unlike diffuse system approaches, the plasma energy is then focused in a controlled manner on the treatment area.

As a Class 1 medical device, the ViroCap system is intended for use as a complementary treatment for dermatological skin and nail disorders. These include, amongst others, onychomycosis (nail fungus), interdigital mycosis (Athlete's Foot between the toes), along with rhagades, fissures and nail bed inflammation.

The treatment is contact-free: an integrated, single-use spacer ensures a defined distance between the device and the treatment area, standardises the application and reduces the risk of cross-contamination. Treatment times are constructed to suit everyday practice: with a duration of around one minute for skin areas and two minutes for nail treatments, the system can be efficiently integrated into existing treatment routines.

RUCK ViroCap is especially lightweight, weighing around 160 grams. It has been designed as a portable handheld device and is battery-powered. With up to 45 treatments per charge, it offers flexible use both within the podiatry practice and during home visits.

The short treatment times and the standardised application procedure using the disposable spacer help to organise daily practice routines efficiently, particularly when carrying out several treatments in succession.

Alongside the product range, the market launch is supported thanks to training and continuing professional development programmes offered by the RUCK Academy. These teach users how to integrate the ViroCap system safely and effectively into existing treatment protocols, so that the professional foundations necessary for responsible use in practice are laid.
